NewPay is a Bulgarian Buy Now, Pay Later platform that enables customers to shop online using deferred or installment payments, while merchants can offer additional payment options directly within their checkout experience.

Behind this relatively simple customer journey sits a complex fintech ecosystem. The platform connects online stores, customers, identity verification, credit assessment, electronic signing, payments, communications, merchant settlements, compliance, and back-office operations into one consistent process.

For NewPay, we developed far more than a website or checkout integration. We built an end-to-end business platform covering the lifecycle from selecting NewPay as a payment method to servicing the purchase, settling with the merchant, and supporting operational reporting.

The Challenge

From a customer's perspective, BNPL appears simple: choose a product, select a payment option, and complete the order. From a technology and operations perspective, however, many interdependent processes sit behind that experience.

The system must integrate NewPay into different online stores, serve both new and returning customers, manage remote identity verification and eligibility checks, determine available financial products, generate and electronically sign documents, process payments and repayment schedules, synchronize purchase status with the merchant, and support compliance and regulatory reporting.

The critical requirement was to make all of these processes feel like one continuous customer experience while keeping the underlying complexity invisible to the end user.

The Solution

We developed a centralized BNPL platform serving the three core participants in the process – the customer, the online merchant, and NewPay's operational team.

Instead of isolating each function in a separate system, the key processes are brought together in one platform and share common business logic. A purchase can move through the online store, identity verification and assessment, product selection, electronic signing, purchase completion, payments, servicing, and reporting without requiring teams to manually transfer the process between disconnected systems.

Fully Digital Customer Journey

One of the primary goals was to allow customers to complete the entire process remotely. When purchasing from an integrated online store, the user selects NewPay as the payment method and continues to the platform.

When required, the system manages registration or sign-in, remote identity verification, eligibility checks, credit assessment, determination of available products, document generation, and electronic signing. The customer then returns to the merchant and the purchase is finalized.

After the initial onboarding, subsequent purchases can require significantly fewer steps because the platform already has the required customer profile and history.

Customer Portal and Self-Service

After a purchase, customers have access to a dedicated self-service portal. It provides a centralized view of active and completed purchases, upcoming payments, outstanding obligations, available products and limits, contracts and other documents, payment history, notifications, and messages.

Customers can also perform routine servicing actions directly from the portal, including payments and early repayment. This reduces the need to contact an operator for standard tasks.

E-commerce Integration

For a BNPL platform, the customer experience is only one side of the equation. The ease with which online stores can connect to the system is equally important.

We developed ready-made integrations for popular e-commerce platforms including WooCommerce, Magento, PrestaShop, and OpenCart. This allows many merchants to introduce NewPay as a payment option without building a custom integration from scratch.

Custom stores and more specialized e-commerce solutions can integrate through the REST API. It allows merchants to create purchases, retrieve their status, confirm order fulfillment, and receive automated notifications when statuses change.

A dedicated testing environment and developer tools allow integrations to be built and validated before going live.

Merchant Portal

Each merchant has access to a dedicated partner portal. Through it, merchants can monitor NewPay purchases, order statuses, cancellations and refunds, payments received from NewPay, commissions, historical data, and reports.

The portal gives merchants transparency over both the operational and financial sides of the service without exposing NewPay's internal administration platform. A dedicated developer area also supports technical teams during integration and troubleshooting.

Payments and Purchase Servicing

The platform manages several payment scenarios, covering both initial payments and the ongoing servicing of installments. Multiple payment channels are supported so customers can choose convenient online and alternative payment methods.

The system tracks the status of each obligation and coordinates due dates, reminders, received payments, early repayment, purchase completion, refunds, and overdue obligations.

Payments therefore form part of the platform's core business logic rather than an isolated external process.

Cancellations, Refunds, and Adjustments

In e-commerce, an order may be cancelled entirely or partially, including after the financial process has already started.

The platform supports full and partial cancellations, recalculation of obligations, refunds of overpaid amounts, amounts that must be returned by the merchant, and financial adjustments in subsequent settlements.

This keeps the e-commerce order flow and the financial process synchronized even when the original order changes.

Merchant Settlements

Once a purchase is completed, the platform also manages the financial relationship with the partner merchant. The system automates the calculation of settlement amounts and agreed commercial conditions and prepares the information required for settlement.

Merchants can track payments and commissions through their portal, while the back-office team has tools for control, confirmation, and reporting. When a purchase is cancelled or refunded, the related financial adjustments are reflected in subsequent operations.

Back-office Platform

Behind the customer and merchant experiences sits a comprehensive administration interface – NewPay's operational control center.

Different teams use it to manage customers, purchases, payments, merchants, settlements, customer documentation, verification and compliance processes, communications, refunds, reporting, content, and system configuration.

Access is role-based, enabling operational, financial, legal, and administrative teams to work only with the functions relevant to their responsibilities. Important actions are logged and traceable.

Compliance and Regulatory Processes

A fintech platform must serve not only customers and merchants but also a wide range of regulatory requirements.

NewPay includes functionality supporting identity and related checks, AML processes, legal document management and versioning, storage of signed documents, GDPR processes, audit trails, and preparation of financial and regulatory reporting.

These processes are embedded directly into the platform's core workflows instead of being handled as separate manual administrative activities.

Operational Automation

A significant part of the platform's value comes from workflows that run automatically in the background.

The system manages automated processes related to status checks, customer reminders, payment monitoring, changes in product availability, overdue obligations, merchant notifications, recurring financial and operational reports, and regulatory reporting.

This allows the back-office team to focus primarily on exceptions instead of manually executing every step of a standard process.

Communications and Content

Financial products require consistent and clear communication throughout the customer journey. The platform centralizes email, SMS, and in-platform notifications.

Different templates are used according to the event and journey stage – registration, verification, documentation, purchases, payments, reminders, and other key events. Content can be managed by the administration team and supports multilingual operations.

Reporting and Business Information

The operational platform generates a substantial amount of data that must be accessible to different teams.

Dozens of reports support portfolio management, customer obligations, sales, merchants, payments, commissions, cancellations, financial flows, compliance processes, and marketing analysis. Some are generated on demand, while others run automatically on a recurring schedule.

This makes the platform not only a transaction-processing system but also a central source of operational and management information.

Integration Ecosystem

NewPay communicates with several types of external systems, including services for remote identity verification, registry checks, credit assessment, card and alternative payments, SMS and email communications, e-commerce platforms, analytics, monitoring, and regulatory reporting.

Each integration forms part of a broader business workflow and must remain reliable even when an external service responds asynchronously or changes status later in the process. Managing these dependencies is one of the key engineering challenges in building a fintech platform of this scale.

Technology Foundation

The platform is built on a proven PHP/Symfony stack with a relational database and an API layer supporting merchants, client applications, and external systems.

  • PHP / Symfony
  • API Platform and REST APIs
  • MySQL / MariaDB and Doctrine ORM
  • Twig, JavaScript components, and Vue
  • Bootstrap and Webpack
  • Docker-based development tooling
  • PDF and spreadsheet generation
  • Application monitoring and centralized logging

The architecture is organized around the platform's main business domains, enabling financial products and operational workflows to evolve without unnecessary duplication of business logic.

What We Achieved

With NewPay, we developed an end-to-end fintech platform connecting online commerce with the financial and operational processes behind a BNPL service.

  • End-to-end digital customer onboarding
  • Remote identity verification and electronic signing
  • Management of deferred-payment and installment products
  • Direct integration into online-store checkout
  • Self-service customer portal
  • Dedicated merchant portal
  • Automated payments, communications, and back-office workflows
  • Management of complex cancellation and refund scenarios
  • Merchant settlement processes
  • Embedded compliance and reporting workflows
  • One centralized system for managing the full service lifecycle

Most importantly, the complexity remains behind the system. For the customer, NewPay feels like an easy way to complete a purchase. For the merchant, it feels like an additional payment method. For the operational team, it becomes a centralized platform from which the entire service lifecycle can be managed.

Why This Project Represents Sirius Software

NewPay is a strong example of custom software where the real challenge is not a single screen or integration, but connecting many different business processes into one reliable system.

Fintech + E-commerce + API integrations + Workflow automation + Payments + Compliance + Back-office software

In systems like these, understanding the business is just as important as choosing the technology.
